The Naxal movement started as a revolt in a small village against the land lords in the Naxalbari village of india has spread to over 13 states out of 29 in india.
The movement is gaining strength by the day. Though there is no common ideology any more and many anti social elements spread a reign of terror in the name of Naxalism, the premise of the movement is ideal.
India happens to be a country of amazing diversity. The deep rooted class discrimination in India has hampered the development of millions of citizens whom we either call as lower class or more popularly stamped as Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Other Backward Class by the Government. The country largely driven by fear of God than Fear of Law has resulted in two things:
1. Rise of upper caste Brahmins who claim to be cleansed enough and nearest to God
2. Rise of upper caste Rajputs and Bhumiyars (In North India) or Redddy and Khammas in south india who are required by Brahmins as saviour of purpose mostly because of streaks of valor they posses
This has resulted in other "So Called" classes being subdued, oppressed and and discriminated. And these are a mighty population. They have been traditionally debarred of good quality of life and even basic education, the worst being the human "Right to Equality"
Naxalism was born out of this detest that people face and the fact that in the last 40 years it has spread Strength on Strength is a testimony that all is not well beneath the carpet. India claims to be a nuclear country and next super power but a large part of population is being suppressed by this.
The cycle of politics runs as:
1. Stage 1: Anarchy (Everyone is the ruler) (Current state of Somalia. - Jan 2010)
2. Stage 2: Monarchy (Submission to an Individual as a ruler)
3. Stage 3: Democracy (Freedom and people's rule)
4. Stage 4: Mobocracy (Rule of the mob) (Current state of Nepal. - Jan 2010)
Due to the deep rooted tradition india never had to face the problem of Anarchy and since ages was under Monarchy till the British rule ended. Democracy was a welcome change in the political scenario of india and the fact that it has failed to uplift the most down trodden person in the society in the 60 + years of its existence has made the common man subjected to accepting that the solution to the problem is a armed revolt against the democratically elected government.
The suppression still goes on. Police atrocities and upper caste dominance doesn't seem to be fading. People are either uneducated or insufficiently educated. With the advent and revolution of communication and media people now know whats better for them and they want to be there. They want to lead a better life and its not far that they will achieve it.
These thought adds as a fuel to the Naxalist Movement. The government loosely terms it as a Naxal Menace but the government must realize the its the inadequate implementation of wonderful public policies, deep rooted corruption, misuse of power by public servants has resulted in this situation. Very difficult to cull these problems, might take long and a continual economic growth to reduce this.
Till then the threat of political control of india getting into the hands of a Mobocratic Government looms large. May be by 2050 or 2060. This is going to be a red country. If the government feels that it has a huge army and they can suppress this movement without hitting the root cause of it, it must realize that the army is made of the same people, people who love their country and their men. A time will come when the army will refuse to kill their own brothers and sisters.
Thats the time when indians will get the "Right to Equality".
